happy valentine's day

The little girls just headed out the door to school with their backpacks filled with the obligatory class valentine's, treats, and decorated boxes. Despite the hassle, I LOVE Valentine's day. Not the commercial "buy your sweetheart flowers/chocolate/jewelry" type Valentine's day, but rather the "you are the most amazing people in the world (i.e. family/friends) and I love you, adore you, and think the world of you" type V-day :-).

our valentine's traditions:

baking and decorating heart-shaped sugar cookies - I tried a new recipe and they were SO yummy - you can find it here.
making homemade suckers for the kids to give to their favorite friends (we thought we would make them for their classes, but after a couple batches yesterday, I realized it would take forever to make almost 60 suckers, so zipped down to the store to buy treats for the unlucky, less than favorite friends ;-).
eating heart-shaped waffles with whipped cream and strawberries on V-day morning (unfortunately, it's just the girls b/c the big kids leave too early - I just leave some out for an after-school snack).
the girls' lunches: ok, I know, a little over the top, but I love surprising them with heart shaped PB & J sandwiches (it's easy - just make the sandwiches and cut out with a cookie cutter and knife).
helping out with the girls' class Valentine's parties - SO fun!
DINNER: the kids pick the menu (tacos is the v-day food of choice this year - go figure), and we decorate the table fun and eat by candlelight. Before we eat, the kids have to leave the room and I put a little surprise on everyone's plate (operative word = "little"), and during the meal I insist everyone mentions at least one thing that they love about another family member.

Alright friends (whom I'm thinking are mostly women, but to those men out there, you can stop reading about now ;-), it's time that I just came out with it and declare the war I wage with PMS. As my friend Kristin has noted, it's really not the best thing to blog when we women are unstable, and I'm pretty good at keeping my little secret under wraps. I'll save you the drama, except to say that it's been one of those weeks (months), and more than a few people who may have previously thought I was pretty great, are now deliberately staying out of my way.

SO, to feel better I've spent this evening laughing my way through some pretty funny quotes pinned on pinterest. It's nice to feel somewhat normal and realize that hormones are just women's hell on earth and hopefully we all understand enough to support one another without judgment or becoming offended when one of us loses it temporarily. The good news is that this time my family made it through unscathed . . . I only offended everyone else I see on a daily basis. Sigh.

That said, let's have some fun:

I absolutely refuse to try any medication to curb the effects of PMS and it's my own fault I've let it get a little out of control (always happens around holidays w/treats I can't resist). This is my formula which is tried and true (straight from my most wonderful GYN who believes wholeheartedly on healing our body/mind naturally):

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise - "mountain therapy" ALWAYS works for me (should have skied on Friday until waiting for the fresh snow Monday - sigh). Choose what you love and make a point to get out and sweat, or even just walk around the block a few times.
No caffeine, chocolate, excess salt or sugar (um, ya, fries, pizza, valentine's cookies . . . and what was I thinking purchasing TWO boxes of "Sweet's" orange sticks - sigh). Loading up on a Diet Coke and chocolate is one of the worst things you can do - keep away from both, and even better if you can stay off soda and caffeine the rest of the month too.
Evening Primrose, Vitamin B complex, and Vitamin D (in winter) . . . um, ya, been lazy and forgot. When I am consistent with these vitamins it really helps and I can feel a difference.

The wonderful things about Liza . . .

she loves outings with mom - and a few hours at Tracy Aviary is still cool

her sensitivity to the world around her is astounding.

We enjoyed a delightful time at the Aviary earlier this week while the big girls were having their tennis lesson (plus, we had the place to ourselves - my advice - take advantage of these balmy winter days and head on over :-). I'm glad I captured a few moments on my phone camera:

This morning as yoga class was coming to a close, my ever intuitive and wise instructor/friend reminded us that "we're all just walking each other home" (quoted by Ram Dass). Her words spoke directly to me and have resonated in my thoughts throughout the day, especially as I reflected on the past week . . .

Sunday morning came much too soon and I couldn't help but think as Chris tried his best wake me at 7:20am, that families with teenagers should be exempt from 9am church. Tired, grumpy, and not feeling the least bit spiritual, I snapped that I wasn't going and that I honestly felt the Sunday before was a waste of time and energy because I fell asleep in all three of the very dull meetings, I didn't learn anything, let alone feel the spirit, and I'd rather just stay home and sleep today. Ahhh, you're enlightened now that I've opened your eyes to my less than stellar self ;-).

However, once awake, it's practically impossible for me to fall asleep again, so I dragged myself and my attitude out of bed to begin the Sunday morning ritual of getting everyone else roused from deep sleep and respectable for church. We did quite well, managing to slip into our designated bench before the opening song had finished (we were running on time until, as we were walking out the door, Chris reminded Ryan that he had forgotten to tuck his "Jedi braid"/ "rat tail" up into his hair so it wouldn't be noticeable at the sacrament table - sigh).

It was fast and testimony meeting, and as we settled into our bench, swiftly handing out hymnbooks down the row to join the congregation in the final verse, I was glad to be there. It had been a "bleah" week and I had been in a funk of sorts, and as these things usually turn out, the Lord must have known exactly how to help me out of my slump . . . through the thoughts and actions of others.

As the meeting began, I was immediately touched by the beautiful and tender words spoken straight from the heart by a sweet 11-year old girl. Her simple testimony touched my heart and prepared my spirit to hear the thoughts from subsequent friends and neighbors who bore powerful witness of the truthfulness of the gospel, but more than that, words I needed to hear to bring me out of my funk and reevaluate my priorities so I can feel that pure joy and happiness that accompanies living a life dedicated to the gospel, my family, service to others, and strengthening my most important relationships, especially with the Savior.

Relief Society was wonderful and again, more wisdom and insights I felt tailored just for me from one of my favorite women in the ward. Her lesson focused on "finding joy" which obviously I had lost sight. I wasn't really looking to tell the truth and needed a swift kick in the pants to remember that life is supposed to be joyful, even with all the tests and trials that accompany mortality. So, even if my week was lousy, and even if my natural woman selfishness was getting the best of me, I could start fresh again and focus my priorities and commit myself to look on the bright side and stop complaining.

This morning as my hands were in prayer over my heart with the instructor's words reverberating in my mind, I bowed and whispered "namaste" in gratitude for the people in my life who are "walking me home" - gently guiding and directing me to become my best self as I continue to progress in this earthly existence with a joyful heart.

Alright, I know I'm a complete movie snob . . . you know, the person behind you trying to stifle laughter while everyone else is sniffling at the end of War Horse because I can only take so much melodramatic, manipulative, Hollywood "if we make the music swell at just the right moment and add cheesy silhouettes against a bright, too perfect sunset, then you, the dumb audience will feel an emotion that probably didn't exist in the first place, but we'll make you feel it anyway." Ugh.

I honestly can't walk into a theater and watch a drama created by the Hollywood machine, it's torturous (especially if it's an adaption of an already ridiculous Nicholas Sparks' novel - saw a dvd of one of those once - NEVER again). However, if the film is something akin to a Mission Impossible or other 'suspend your disbelief' action flicks, or even a well written comedy, then yes, I'll go and enjoy the escape for a couple hours.

OK, off my soapbox and on to my point. Indie films. Independent films created by talented directors outside the mega studios using small budgets and lesser know actors. Films that connect with the audience on a deeper level than studio movies because the emotions are REAL - not contrived, not predictable, and especially not manipulative. That's why I love Sundance, and this year I would have to say my favorite film was the very low budget, but beautifully directed and emotionally raw I am not a Hipster.

The themes explored in this film are universal and I connected with every character on a level I didn't expect. Of course it wasn't perfect and its flaws will be apparent to any discerning film critic, but it affected me deeply and touched my heart. Without giving too much of the story away, it is a portrayal of a troubled soul - the internal struggle within the main character after he has disappointed everyone who is dear to him, and the unconditional love and forgiveness that sometimes are only found within the bonds of family and the best of friends. There was absolutely nothing contrived in this film and its sincerity and genuine warmth was powerful. I am always thrilled when a director "gets it," when they understand so completely the very real human emotions of loneliness, estrangement, frustration, connections, and of course, love. The film was also infused with moments of laugh-out-loud humor, tenderness, and amazing music. I look forward to seeing it again and hope it gets picked up for wide release. So, as the next Nicholas Sparks' "book made into a movie" makes its debut in theaters around the nation, check out the offerings at your local art house theater. I guarantee you'll find a better story that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

I knew I would run into the director and cast of this film - it was that special - it made my whole week . . . and yes, Caroline was part of the magic too (only she had no idea why I was so excited to talk with these people ;-).

SUNDANCE '12

My week officially ended tonight with a beautiful documentary by director Joe Berlinger in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Paul Simon's Graceland album. It was the perfect ending to an amazing line-up of films that made me smile, laugh, cry, think, and contemplate life's journey. But most importantly, they touched and expanded my heart.

holiday 2011

Before January comes to an end, I've just got to wrap up the end of last year. The holidays were definitely simple and low key, which was partly nice and relaxing, but on the other hand, a little dull to be honest. It was the first year since we moved into our home that we didn't host a party or gathering of sorts, so things were pretty quiet around here.

It seemed the holidays really crept up on us this year with the end of the year trips we had planned, so I was just lucky to finish the Christmas shopping and fortunate that all but one gift arrived before Christmas eve (poor Sophie just got a "picture" of her new i-pod since Mr. Claus was even less on the ball than Mrs. Claus ;-). I've learned that taking off a week before Thanksgiving, and then for a long weekend the first week in December really does a number on how much time is left to prepare for the holidays, hence, no Christmas cards sent out before Christmas!

All in all it was a nice holiday season in which we continued our favorite family traditions: baking rolls and apples/yams for Thanksgiving, picking out the Christmas tree together (we even took Lucy to the lot this year), feeling more kindness and appreciation for each other as we passed the "love pillow" along, baking cookies and decorating a gingerbread house, school programs, making grandma Janice's cheese ball, listening to our favorite Christmas music, the girls' holiday piano recital, attending a musical (this year it was Annie), visiting Temple Square, going to movies (Hugo on Christmas Eve, and War Horse on New Year's Eve), our Christmas Eve treasure hunt, enjoying a lovely Christmas Day sacrament program, New Year's Krumkake and toast, and of course, skiing and sledding on what little snow was to be found during that oh, so dry December.

Another year has come to a close and for the first time as long as I can remember, we didn't get Christmas cards out in December, so we sent "happy new year's" greetings to our dear friends and family. Also, the tradition of enclosing one of our family letters with the card didn't happen, so this post will be our official 2011 Cantera update.

As I was addressing our cards the other night, I couldn't help but feel the connection and ease that accompanies friendship and family closeness. Although it was so nice not stressing over the cards in December, while sitting at the table, pen in hand in the solitude of late evening, I remembered why I do love sending holiday greetings - it gives me a moment to recall all who have touched our lives in one way or another, and through the act of simply writing a name, I am blessed by those memories.

In true Cantera fashion, it was another busy year filled with activities, school, vacations, church callings, projects, celebrations, sports, and plenty of time on the sidelines and in the car. A quick perusal of this blog will bring anyone up to date on our noteworthy 2011 events and happenings. But this year, I would like to bring you up to speed on how we are doing, rather than just the what we are doing . . .

Ryan (16) is navigating his way through his junior year of high school - juggling school work, social life, sports, family life, young men's, and increasing responsibilities at every turn. Ryan can be gregarious and playful one minute, and a typical teenager needing his space the next. He is surrounded by good friends and takes the minimal leisure time he has quite seriously (namely 'Sports' Center' and weekends out). One of my favorite traits about Ryan is his awareness of what everyone is up to . . . he never forgets where family members have been and always asks us how things went.

We are holding tight to these final years with Ryan in the home, and know deep down, despite his longing to be out on his own and away from bothersome little sisters, he will miss the family and the good times we share together.

Caroline (14) has definitely come into her own this year and is not just Ryan's "little sister," but one of his closest friends and confidants. I consider this one of my greatest blessings, that these two teenagers have formed such a strong bond. Caroline has emerged into her 9th grade year filled with confidence and an inner strength that continues to flourish. She is a true friend to everyone she meets and has a smile that lights up the room. Her days are filled with friends, homework, babysitting, piano, young women's, and her passion - tennis.

She will admit that the first couple years of junior high put her optimism and trust in others to the test, but she made it through and has become a shining example to all who know her, especially her sisters who adore her. Caroline is a happy soul and we couldn't imagine life without her quick wit and sweet laugh.

Sophie (10) wishes every single day that she could have her own room. Liza has a way of pushing her patience to the limit and there are days when all I can do is throw my hands up and hope that one day these girls will love each other dearly. When Sophie isn't frustrated with a sister or brother, she can be found in the basement pounding the tennis ball on our concrete backboard, kicking a soccer ball in the yard, running races, reading, practicing piano, or surrounded by her giggly 5th grade friends.

Sophie works hard at everything she does, and like Ryan, enjoys her space and solitude at times. Her competitive spirit has served her well in her various sports, and is thrilled when Caroline will hit with her and give her tips on the court. She is an absolute beauty and there are days when I wonder what happened to my little girl, knowing soon I'll have another teenager in the home.

Liza (7) has somehow morphed into what the older kids refer to as "the awkward child." She still continues to keep us laughing practically every day and I hope she feels confident with herself and her abilities. The poor girl has to deal with three extra parents who think they all know what she should be doing an every given moment . . . sigh. Liza handles her bossy siblings quite well and is always happy when someone will play a game or color with her.

She is still the delight of the family and filled with such random thoughts and expressions we can't help but anticipate great things from this girl as she grows older. She works so hard in school, on the piano, and in ski team. She loves to read and just devoured her first abridged copy of "Little Women." Liza is so patient at home, in church, and in school. She also knows how much her mom still loves to hold her, and is always willing to crawl into my lap for a snuggle. How grateful we are for our Elizabeth Jane.

Chris & Julie are so blessed, especially for the Gospel of Jesus Christ which give us the inspiration and additional light we need to guide and direct our children. We continue to "press forward" each day experiencing the highs and lows of marriage and parenthood. Where else would we learn to be more patient, kind, gentle, and loving than in the crucible of family life?

2011 has been a year to remember. We have seen personal miracles and the Lord's hand working in our lives, and we have drawn closer to one another and our children through memorable experiences and vacations, as well as the ordinary every day events that lead to meaningful conversations and discussions when least expected.

We know that as we hold fast to the truths we hold dear, we can look forward with a perfect brightness of hope and be filled with the love of God as we bring that love into our hearts, home, and community.

This poor, neglected blog. I begin to feel the longing to write again, a gentle tug pulling me back into the world of writing. Hopefully I still remember how to write, how to capture the moments and feelings that are so dear to me, even if they flit in and out of my mind so quickly and grasping them to put on paper almost seems an exercise in futility.

After dropping Caroline off at her friend's this evening and making my way back to Wasatch, I was greeted by one of our breathtaking sunsets . . . the entire eastern sky above Mt. Olympus was painted pink and the western sky blazed of winter rose and orange. It was simply stunning, and true to form, I suddenly stopped the car in the middle of the street (making sure no one was behind me) and jumped out and took a picture with my phone, obviously not capturing the scenery as lovely as I saw it, but nonetheless a moment I needed to keep because it made me write again:

This evening's sunset reminded me of the brilliant "winter wonderland" I stumbled across a few weeks ago as Liza and I were heading up Big Cottonwood early on a Saturday morning for ski team. As we approached the meadow just east of the Spruces we were greeted by a scene like no other . . . the trees, the ground, and every branch on every bush glistened in the morning sun like crystal. It was simply one of the most beautiful sites I'd ever seen, so of course, I stopped and took another phone picture:

I don't think I'll ever be able to aptly express how I feel about Yosemite. Obviously, I haven't visited all the national parks our country has to offer, but out of the parks I have been to, Yosemite is and probably always will be my favorite. There is a spirit here that touches my spirit and rejuvenates my soul. The place seems to me a living, breathing entity, which, like a person is constantly changing as the day progresses from early dawn, to bright afternoon, to dusk, to blackest of night. We were privileged this trip to not only hike to the top of the tallest waterfall in North America, but descend by a full moon (thank goodness just the last 1/3 mile) and then witness that moon rise over half dome from the meadow and light up the impressive, towering granite face of El Capitan. I will NEVER forget the view of Yosemite valley that night from "tunnel view" as we were departing the park and heading back to our hotel . . .

and hope to return to see it again.

I just realized there are three different posts that I *thought* about writing, but never got around to making it happen. So, before the holiday season becomes too crazy and my memories fade, I'm attempting to catch up on some noteworthy events . . . namely Halloween, our NYC/Boston trip, and Yosemite.

once in a lifetime

Last weekend I experienced one of those rare, but oh so pure, mesmerizing, "if you breathe you'll break the spell" moments. A moment that I want to remember for the rest of my life, because it was so fleeting, so real, so beautiful that I really don't expect it to ever happen again.

I know, you're probably thinking my ramblings will continue down the familiar path destined to arrive at a moment when nature spoke to me. Not so this time, I'll spare you another "Julie loves nature" post for now (that will be included in the upcoming "Yosemite is the most spiritual place on earth" post - just a warning ;-).

I'm talking about spending two magical evenings in nostalgic, tiny, lost in time California towns sitting in small theaters with unbelievable acoustics listening to Jackson Browne work his magic. It was like we were invited into his own living room for a private, intimate concert. It's a wonderful sight to see a small stage laden only with a row of guitars, a chair and table, and a piano.

In my eyes, Jackson Browne's music and lyrics transcend the human condition. It's not just his rich, full, emotionally charged voice that touches my soul, but his sublime understanding of humanity, of love and longing, happiness, laughter, sorrow, peace, and the troubled heart. I was moved to tears more than once, especially during Saturday evening's concert in Hanford, CA when Jackson became emotional himself and struggled for a moment to compose himself during a few songs ("Late for the Sky," "The Pretender," and "Enough of the Night" - the song written about his sister, who incidentally had passed away last year).

The highlight during the 3 hours happened as we were yelling out our favorite songs and someone asked to hear HIS favorite song . . . . Jackson then treated us to a beautiful song written by Leonard Cohen, "A Thousand Kisses Deep," which he sang with such raw emotion the audience was spellbound - to be granted entrance to a personal moment like that of someone you've admired for years, was captivating. To me, this concert almost felt like a "swan song" of sorts, and I'm not sure if I really want to see him perform again because nothing will compare with the beauty of this night.

Chris was just as taken in, if not more, than I was. I think the best part of the experience for him was having a conversation with Jackson after Friday evening's show about how great it was to hear one of his more obscure songs, "Linda Paloma" from The Pretender (1976), and how amazed we were that he could just pull it out of his hat and play/sing it so beautifully. During Saturday's performance, Jackson shared with the audience his conversation with Chris and then proceeded to play the song once again for the Hanford crowd.

I'm just going to cut to the chase. This film was enchanting, exquisite, and pure magic from beginning to end. Indeed, I'm sure film critics around the globe have already pointed out its plot deficiencies and flaws, but let's face it, for me it was perfection. I love Paris. I adore Woody Allen movies. I love art and writing. I'm intrigued by the search for one's soul mate, and add bonus points if it's paired with a personal journey of discovery and reflection. AND I need to laugh . . . not some silly, Hollywood contrived "make the audience laugh here" moment, but true "human to human moment of understanding" humor. I actually found myself giddy as the movie progressed because each scene was absolutely delightful.

Another lovely evening at the Broadway, which feels like a home away from home since I head down there so often.

Thanks Woody for intelligent writing, for confirming my faith in dreams without slaughtering disillusionment, and for making my memories of Paris more vivid than ever. Indeed, as Gil muses in the film, "There is no city like this in the world."

And not many movies come along that make you smile like "Midnight in Paris" . . .

Finding the perfect pumpkins with my girls

What a beautiful, crisp, autumn morning it is today - we couldn't ask for a more perfect Halloween - even I get a little giddy on this most wonderful holiday :-). I absolutely adore everything about this time of year: the bright blue skies, cooler days and evenings, sweaters and jackets, leaves changing and dropping, the World Series, pumpkin patches, school Halloween parades and parties, roasted pumpkin seeds, neighborhood gatherings . . . even the last minute scurry to put costumes together!

One of our favorite traditions is listening to Jerry Seinfeld's "Halloween." It's hilarious and the kids never tire of hearing this classic stand-up routine. We keep the cd in the car during the season and listen during long drives, plus the illustrations in the book are fantastic. CLICK HERE to listen.

This tradition is one for the ages . . . I'm sure my grandkids will be listening and laughing along with their parents in the years to come.

I am finally getting around to posting a few thoughts swirling around my head regarding the past general conference meeting of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, held the first weekend of October. As you may know, I love general conference and eagerly look forward to hearing from our prophet, the apostles, and other general authorities of the church. There is always at least one talk that deeply touches my soul, one talk that urges me to do a little better, one talk that reminds me of who I am and of my purpose, and one talk that speaks directly to my heart of the undeniable truth and validity of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and all it encompasses. My testimony is always strengthened as I listen to the testimonies of others as they bear personal witness of the Savior, the restoration, a living prophet, and the Book of Mormon.

Elder Callister's talk immediately peeked my attention because of its wisdom, intellect, and strength of testimony regarding the Book of Mormon. It also followed two of the most beautiful messages of the conference, given by Henry B. Eyring and Robert D. Hales.

Indeed, I was taught and inspired by all the messages, but will never forget Elder Callister's powerful testimony of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. He is right when he notes that there is no middle ground concerning this book, it truly is the word of God . . .

"That is the genius of the Book of Mormon—there is no middle ground. It is either the word of God as professed, or it is a total fraud. This book does not merely claim to be a moral treatise or theological commentary or collection of insightful writings. It claims to be the word of God—every sentence, every verse, every page. Joseph Smith declared that an angel of God directed him to gold plates, which contained the writings of prophets in ancient America, and that he translated those plates by divine powers. If that story is true, then the Book of Mormon is holy scripture, just as it professes to be; if not, it is a sophisticated but, nonetheless, diabolical hoax."

I read this book YEARS ago, and just finished it again yesterday. It now ranks among my top five novels of all time. Truly a masterpiece of brilliant proportions with power to stun readers with universal emotion and truth. I was moved to tears as I read Maugham's final words - grateful for the heart wrenching and passionate life experience of Phillip Carey.

The writing is fascinating from beginning to end, and oh how I wish I could take raw emotion, regret, faith, sorrow, joy, pain, idealism, pride, happiness, disillusionment, beauty, love, irrationality, hope . . . and capture it on paper. Somerset Maugham did just that almost a hundred years ago in this observant classic which continues to haunt our innermost fears and desires, and persuade readers to question the purpose of living in a world that at times seems hopeless.

Of the several dog-eared pages of my book, one passage in the final chapters stands out as Phillip faces the handicap that he has struggled against for so long . . .

He accepted the deformity which had made life so hard for him; he knew that it had warped his character, but now he saw also that by reason of it he had acquired that power of introspection which had given him so much delight. Without it he would never have had his keen appreciation of beauty, his passion for art and literature, and his interest in the varied spectacle of life. The ridicule and contempt which had so often been heaped upon him had turned his mind inward and called for those flowers which he felt would ever lose their fragrance. Then he saw that normal was the rarest thing in the world. Everyone had some defect, of body or of mind: he thought of all the people he had known (the whole world was like a sick-house, and there was no rhyme or reason in it), he saw a long procession, deformed in body and warped in mind, some with illness of the flesh, weak hearts or weak lungs, and some with illness of the spirit, languor of will, or a craving for liquor. Every year I look forward to the annual Relief Society meeting held the week before the October general conference. It is always a spiritual lift to listen to the RS general presidency and a member of the First Presidency speak to the women of the church. So yesterday evening a friend and I headed downtown to the conference center to hear the inspirational messages and feel the beautiful spirit of so many righteous women gathered together in one place.

I especially felt a connection with Elder Uchtdorf's sincere and timely message of never forgetting the simple things in life that will bring an added measure of joy and peace. He used the analogy of the forget-me-not flower and mentioned five things we should never "forget," just like the five tiny, perfect blue petals on this delicate, unpretentious flower.

never forget . . .

1. to be patient with yourself. Part of our mortal experience is to have weaknesses. We are not perfect and no one expects us to be, especially our Heavenly Father. Be compassionate with yourself. We have a tendency to compare our weaknesses to others' strengths, and by so doing feel we will never measure up. However, by staying on the long path of discipleship, our weaknesses will eventually become our STRENGTHS.

2. the difference between a good sacrifice and a foolish sacrifice. Be wise when committing our time and energy. Sacrifice is worthwhile when we are sacrificing something "good" for something "better." Our time is limited - choose wisely.

3. to be happy now. Never fail to notice the blessings that surround you daily. Don't be miserable while waiting for your "golden ticket" - that elusive goal that you believe will bring happiness. Be vigilant and watch for the everyday miracles and blessings.

4. the "why" of the gospel. Never forget that the gospel is the pathway leading to happiness and peace in this life and a fullness of joy in the life to come. Seek out the beauty of the "why" we live the gospel and keep our covenants . . . this will transform the mundane into the magnificent.

5. that the Lord LOVES you. Never forget that you are a precious daughter of a loving Heavenly Father, that you are never forgotten, and loved with an infinite love. He loves you because you are His child and are the daughters of His kingdom. Never forget that His love in your heart can heal any wound and relieve every heartache.

reflecting on 20 years

September 21, 1991

I really can't believe we celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary earlier this week. I remember my PARENTS' 20th anniversary when I was in Jr. High and they seemed so OLD. Honestly, how did this milestone creep up on us so quickly? As alarming as hitting 20 years together seems, it's also been a sweet reminder of the things that have kept us together all these years and how we've grown, both individually and collectively. We've reminisced about everything from the excitement of meeting one another and dating, to the realization that we've actually put up with one another for this long ;-).

Of course, we have had highs and lows like every other marriage . . . we've struggled, we've done stupid things, we've hurt one another, we've said things we regret, we've felt unsupported, unappreciated, and misunderstood, we've yelled and slammed doors, we've cried together, we've forgiven, we've learned from our mistakes, and we've stayed up all night working things out . . . we've also created countless memories, laughed so hard it hurts, shared some unbelievable experiences and adventures, nurtured our faith and testimonies in the gospel, raised our children with unflinching honesty, and become closer with each passing year. Through it all, we've realized that we are two firstborn stubborn, opinionated, passionate people who care deeply about each other and couldn't get along without the other.

I don't know what I would do without Chris. We both agree that we would be lost souls if one of us were gone. What we've realized in the years since our wedding day, is that our marriage is anything but "perfect" - it requires vigilance and constant nurturing, understanding, and communication. However, it also has become one of my richest blessings as I continue to develop greater patience, humility, empathy, and charity for my family members as well as others.

Some say "soul mates" don't exist, that it's just a matter of luck or timing. But I believe they do. I truly believe that I could only learn some of the most important lessons for my personal growth here in mortality through my relationship with Chris. We were meant to find each other 21 years ago, in circumstances that every year seem more than coincidental. It wasn't a chance meeting, but truly a soul connection that brought us together, and the longer we live and grow together, the more I believe that is true. It seems everyone is searching for some sort of "soul connection" these days because it's my most popular post, receiving several hits each day. After some digging I found the quote in its entirety. It's simply exquisite . . . and oh, so true:

Ya know, that month where we attempt to squeeze every last minute "summer break" activity into the three weeks before school begins (insanely early this year on the 22nd). Well, our August was filled to the brim with Cantera adventures.

Here's the run-down via a boatload of pictures:

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Last night the little girls and I headed downtown to see the Broadway tour of Mary Poppins. It was absolutely delightful, enchanting, and literally pure magic from beginning to end. If you know me, you know how much I love the theater. It's always a treat to share my adoration for the stage with my children.

Sophie's favorite were the chimney sweeps and tap dancing in Step in Time, Liza's favorite was the choreography in Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (which was unbelievable), and I would have to say I was completely taken in by the soaring kites during Let's go Fly a Kite, along with the fantastic sets and brilliant scenery (especially for "It's a Jolly Holiday"). Also, the actress who played Mary was "practically perfect" in every sense of the word.

If you have kids and haven't seen this musical, we highly recommend going before it leaves town at the end of the month. You won't be disappointed - adults and children alike!

Not just a marriage, an eternal marriage

The topic today in relief society was eternal marriage. It was my week to give the lesson and I shared this thoughtful quote from a talk given in General Conference a few years back by F. Burton Howard of the seventy . . .

An eternal marriage is eternal. Eternal implies continuing growth and improvement.
It means that man and wife will honestly try to perfect themselves. It means that the marriage relationship is not to be frivolously discarded at the first sign of disagreement or when times get hard. It signifies that love will grow stronger with time and that it extends beyond the grave. It means that each partner will be blessed with the company of the other partner forever and that problems and differences might as well be resolved because they are not going to go away.
Eternal signifies repentance, forgiveness, long-suffering, patience, hope, charity, love, and humility. All of these things are involved in anything that is eternal, and surely we must learn and practice them if we intend to claim an eternal marriage.

I love this quote and the perspective it offers of eternity; that it is a gradual progression towards perfection, and as we continue to grow and overcome weaknesses together, and earnestly strive to live our lives in harmony with the gospel, our eternal companionship will be blessed. What a beautiful reminder to keep our marriage strong and continue to nurture the bond that began, for us, twenty years ago next month.

What summer isn't complete without at least one trip to the emergency room??? Yep, Liza fell off the monkey bars and broke her arm while at the park with the neighborhood kids. Aren't neighbors who take your children to the park and feed them dinner while their mother enjoys a relaxing evening at the movies with girlfriends the greatest?! Sigh. Thank goodness Chris was home because I certainly wasn't paying attention to my phone with it's ten missed calls and unread texts buried deep inside my purse.

Of course our August has stayed true to the pattern we began at the beginning of the summer and I've suddenly found myself counting the HOURS until school begins.

Happy 10th Birthday!

Our spunky Sophie turned ten a few weeks ago (July 31st), and spent her birthday driving home from our California trip - how fun for her. She actually didn't mind much since we had a few mini celebrations beforehand - getting her ears pierced in Newport, ice-cream cake with grandma and grandpa in St. George, birthday dinner in Old Town, and a special "happy birthday" sign and recognition on our dolphin expedition. She also loved the fact that we had to drive past the American Fork hospital on our way to pick up Lucy and reminisce about the day she was born and those first few months we welcomed her into our family.

Her favorite gift was the book of photos celebrating the last two years . . .

It was time for a break. It was cluttering my mind and taking precious time away from things that matter most. I battled back and forth, discussing the pros and cons endlessly with myself.

So yes, I committed social suicide last week by leaving facebook - gasp.

It was like breaking up with a really cool, but unstable boyfriend. The guy you think is really great for you because everyone says how amazing you are together, but deep down you know he's nothing but trouble. Really, I liked facebook, a lot. I love to socialize - I'm a overly social person (if you haven't figured that out already ;-). I still remember my 8th grade English teacher reminding me that if my academic skills were as brilliant as my social skills, I'd be a genius.

Of course we were a perfect match. However, my desire to be social and my love of people and friends led me to forget the things that deep down I know make me the happiest and bring the most fulfillment. Facebook became my "downtime" and began to slowly replace the activities that used to fill that precious time. A few weeks ago, I realized it had been so long since I'd really sat down at the piano, which used to be one of my favorite downtime activities.

So I'm taking a long break from social media. I have to admit that the habit to check facebook is strong, but the feeling of freedom is stronger. I don't know if it will be a forever thing because there are many qualities I liked about the site, but for now, being out of the loop and not knowing what everyone is up to has been unbelievably liberating.

I'm sure I'll be back eventually, and when I make that decision I'll most likely discreetly log on and clear out a few "friends" whom I really don't even know personally, and hopefully my reunion with facebook will be much more healthy and stable :-).

Our summer vacation

After a crazy summer when I had to wonder if the entire family had even been under the roof at the same time for more than a few days, we took off for sunny southern California for a week of uninterrupted family time. It was just what we needed and since we haven't seen much of each other and we truly enjoyed every minute of our together time (I couldn't believe it either - the kids actually did LIKE being with each other!). Our days were spent on the beach, in the pool, hanging out with friends (our good friends the Larsens were at their beach house the same week), playing tennis together, perusing surf shops, staying up late, and just general relaxation in that oh, so perfect seaside climate.

I made a little memory book last night and figured sharing this on the blog is a whole lot easier than downloading all those pics . . .

If planning a trip to SoCal with the family, I recommend staying here. It's our favorite place to stay - plenty of room for the family in the villa and just a beautiful resort.

For surf lessons in Huntington, call our new friend SAM - he was great, the kids loved him, and we all got up on surfboards!

If your kids want to see dolphins and even a whale, head to Dana Point and find Captain Dave's Dolphin Safari. We sailed through a pod of literally hundreds of dolphins while they swam and played alongside the catamaran - we loved every minute - more fun than SeaWorld.

Don't forget running on the beach - Crystal Cove State Park is perfect and just across the street from the resort . . .

Livin' the DREAM

Cowgirl Heaven

Last week Sophie's dream of riding a horse for days on end and even participating in a rodeo came true. If you are not aware of her fascination with all things HORSE that began at age 6, you can read about it here, here, and here. Even her bedroom is decorated with a sweet horse quilt, a framed horse watercolor she painted, and plenty of "Breyer" horse collectibles and stuffed animals.

So, after a few years of riding lessons and realizing that we are obviously not ranch people nor will ever own a horse, I made a deal that if she discontinued the lessons she could have an entire week at "rodeo camp." Sophie readily agreed, and after finding the perfect cowgirl hat, boots, rodeo shirt, and silver buckled belt, she was off to spend a week in breathtaking Island Park, Idaho with other kids who love horses as much as she does!

It turned out to be the stuff dreams are made of, and the morning I went to pick her up, she was begging to stay another week. While she was at the camp, Liza and I had a mini vacation ourselves which is just what our neglected child needed - one on one time with mom . . . win-win. I'm sure this will become a tradition because Sophie is already talking about next year and how she is definitely going back . . .

I haven't even logged on the last couple of weeks and just found my 4th of July post sitting in my drafts waiting for some captions before it goes public. How grateful I am for the founding fathers of our country and the foundation of liberty, freedom, and peace they created for those who live today. I know my children don't fully appreciate the sacrifice, courage, and divine inspiration that laid the bedrock for the freedoms we enjoy, but I hope for the few days surrounding the 4th of July, their hearts were touched for a moment and they felt a sense of appreciation and gratitude toward the great men and women whom we owe so much.

Last night after Ryan voiced his opinion that moving to be closer to school, friends, and activities no longer appealed to him, we finally made the decision after years of indecision to stay put and truly make this house our home for many years to come.

Chris took the house off the market today. No more thoughts of moving. Ever.

As I sit here relaxing on our front porch, listening to the mixture of whispers and screams waft through the air as the neighborhood kids play "Ghost in the Graveyard," the thought of trying to replicate such a scene some place else seems absurd. This is truly a gem of a neighborhood, where pick up games of kick-the-can, capture the flag, kickball, and hide-n-seek are the norm. A rare neighborhood where we have 25 kids between the ages of 2 and 16 . . . a place where everyone has a friend.

A neighborhood where childhood memories are forged on cool summer evenings like tonight.

But it's not just for my children, I came to the realization on my Sunday morning walk with Lucy up the Quarry Trail that I need these mountains . . . I need the pure beauty of it all. I don't think I can give this up - give up brilliant springs, the glorious autumns, the smell of fresh pine, nor the scent of the creek as it rushes downstream. The granite walls of our canyon have truly become home and my walks and trail runs are not only routine, but have become an essential part of who I am.

It must have been our destiny all along. We were meant to stay, and now that we've come to that conclusion with the lessons learned along the way, it feels oh, so right.

The neighborhood is now dark and silent, the children have all disappeared inside, and I'm alone with the familiar sound of crickets chirping, the canyon breeze, and the stars. Indeed it was meant to be, we just took the long way around before we figured it out.

Sometimes that's just life . . . it's patterned for slow learners like myself :-).

The little girls are now officially capable of being left alone at the club to finish tennis/swim lessons, order lunch, and hang out with their friends at the pool.

I tackled a major Costco run and picked them up on the way home.

when a child reaches another milestone signifying more freedom for me and more independence for them.

Today's moment came when Sophie rushed in the house breathless, asked if she and best buddy/tennis partner Carli could grab their gear and ride bikes over to our friend's backyard court to play tennis. The girls have only ventured across the busy road that connects our neighborhoods once, and they made it home in one piece, so Carli's mom and I figured they could give it a go again.

We filled water bottles, sprayed sunscreen, snapped helmet straps on tight, and sent them on their merry way . . . a couple hours later Sophie appeared in the house with a silly grin plastered on her face that read, "see, I can do it all by myself, and oh ya, we had a blast!"

And I finished vacuuming. Everyone wins.

I know I'm a week behind with my Father's Day post, but need to share a little someting Ryan wrote awhile back when he was completing a "Duty to God" requirement. He was asked to detail ten attributes about a person he admires. He chose his dad, and this was his list:

He's smart
He's a hard worker
He's in good shape and takes care of himself
He is caring
He is a good example to us
He is fun to be around and makes us laugh
He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and has a strong testimony

He provides for his family and takes care of us

Well, just for starters . . .

They invited Sophie and Liza to come visit in St. George ALL week, where they fed them, entertained them, took them horseback riding, hiking in Zion, swimming, to the library, dinosaur museum, and to a play at Tuacahn. Bless them.

They have invited the rest of us down for the weekend for more swimming, refrigerator raids, and general mooching.

They take my son golfing.

They arrange tennis lessons for my daughters.

They always have a project ready for one of the kids to help with.

They don't mind when my kids order burgers and fries from their club account while at the pool.

They will walk to the park, several times a day, if requested by one of the children.

They check movie times in the area and plan a family movie outing.

They stay up late playing cards or dominoes with the teenagers.

They will play endless games of "pick-up-sticks" or "Sequence Jr." with the littles.

They take time to listen to their daughter and enjoy our heart to heart chats.

They never fail to tell the kids how wonderful, smart, good-looking, athletic, talented, and fabulous they are (I know, holy ego boost).

They send us back home with a car loaded with snacks, treats, water bottles and gatorade.

Thanks Mom and Dad - you are the BEST!

Deep clean vacuum all the rugs

A couple loads of laundry

Color gray roots (thanks Clairol), shower, blow dry my hair, put on make-up, and actually put on REAL clothes

2 1/2 hour lunch outing with a friend (when we sat down at the restaurant, we both said it felt like we were on VACATION)

Write in my journal

Blog

Set up my husband's facebook account (if you know Chris, be his friend!)

Organize and clean cupboards, shelves, and the pantry

Chat with neighbors outside without interruptions

Play piano for an hour, uninterrupted

Polish the kitchen table and chairs

Read, read, read

Hike up the trail a bit to watch the sunset

Meaningful conversations with Chris during our peaceful evening meals for two

Organize the food storage

Watch the Stanley Cup Finals (way to go BRUINS) and catch up on "Breaking Bad" and "The Daily Show" while cuddling on couch with hubby

Shop on the internet (so much fun - can't remember the last time I took time to do this!)

Listen to my music . . . and play it loud

Make phone calls

Finally clean out the ski closet and replace all the helmets, gloves, goggles, and ski pants with towels, sunscreen, and beach toys.

SLEEP IN. Yep, slept in until almost 10am this morning - felt great :-).

We get all the kids back on Saturday,
and I've realized that every mother needs a few days in her own house ALONE.

That is what I consider a vacation.

Another school year over

Last Wednesday marked the end of another elementary school year for my girls. The last day of school is always such a tender time as the mixed emotions of elation that summer is finally here and the nostalgic sadness that my little ones are one year older and moving on to the next grade, seem to take over. As I walked through the elementary school to drop off teacher gifts, say my good-byes, and snap a few pictures it was difficult to hold back the tears. Seriously, I am such a wimp.

The desire to hold onto childhood isn't nearly as strong with the older kids, where the end of the school year marks an increase in maturity, wisdom, responsibility, and independence. R and C finished their 10th and 8th grades the previous Friday celebrating with friends, staying out much too late, and sleeping in much too long!

U2 360, round two

Since I am bound and determined not to let May happenings slip by, I'm backtracking a bit and figured a recap from the latest U2 concert are most necessary, even if I did write a lengthy post detailing our last concert experience. With that said, I was in awe every bit as much as last time, however we were so close to the band, it felt at times like a private concert . . . wow, wow, wow. Each minute was pure joy, but I still have my favorites and wish I could see Bono and crew perform all the songs that make my heart soar.

SLC highlights from my "top 20": City of Blinding Lights, All I Want is You, Beautiful Day, Moment of Surrender, Magnificent and Walk On. Of course, no U2 concert is complete without Mysterious Ways, Vertigo, Elevation and a few "Joshua Tree" favorites. Also, every time I hear Even Better than the Real Thing I am instantly transported back to that evening . . . truly, the perfect way to begin the concert. If I had no other life, I would follow Bono and The Edge around the country, but alas, real life awaits, but it was sure nice to lose myself in the brilliance of their music for a few hours back on Tuesday, May 24th.

Today marked another unwelcome milestone: the last 1st grade program I'll attend until I have grandchildren.

How depressing.

It was precious. Cute Liza in her favorite sundress and cardigan standing up straight and tall next to her 1st grade buddies singing her little heart out with the rest of those adorable toothless children. It didn't hit me until the final couple of songs that this was it, after three other sweet, innocent, and informative 1st grade programs throughout the years, this was my last . . . my baby was moving on.

Sniffle, sniffle.

I did pretty well holding it together until the slide show. What is it about sadistic 1st grade teachers that want to make mothers of last children make fools of themselves in front of their neighbors?? Really, flood gates and NO tissues . . . man, I wasn't prepared. My friends from the neighborhood (who, btw, still have younger children) offered their support and condolences with looks of confused sympathy. Just wait my friends, your day will be here soon!

It was just last week for FHE that we watched Ryan's 1st grade program from Rock Canyon Elementary school in Provo, and now my little Liza was singing in hers. Life seriously moves too quickly, and I'm finding myself becoming more emotional with each milestone. Really, crying on the last day of "mommy and me" Kindermusik was one thing . . . what in the world am I going to be like when she graduates from high school??

The least I can do is capture the moment forever. Oh, wait, the video camera didn't have a battery and my camera battery died. Wow, nice one Mom. But, I did have the cell phone for a quick, yet grainy shot of my girl. Oh, and thanks Caroline for spending the morning of your first day of summer break supporting your little sister . . . and wondering what is wrong with your overly emotional mother.

And thanks Liza for the giant hug and sweet kiss after the program. You rock my world young one!

14 years

I just love this picture of Caroline, courtesy of my friend Michelle who has the camera I really need to get for myself (but until then, I guess I'll keep bugging her to take my kids' pictures :-). She took some pics of Caroline for her poster when she ran for SBO of her Jr. High a few weeks ago (didn't make it - dang it) and we thought they captured her personality perfectly!

Caroline's birthday was actually on May 25th, and I promised this year I would not neglect her birthday post like last year - ugh (seriously, a birthday at the end of May is pretty much equivalent to a Christmas birthday). Every year on her birthday we reminisce about the night she was born and how Chris had left the country just the day before and couldn't get a flight back home until she was ten days old. It's a pretty funny story and the memory of her birth and how completely unprepared we were for an early delivery seems like yesterday. Who knew that she was once our scrawny little five pounder!

I believe that one can't turn 14 and make it through the insanity of Jr. High School without having a kindred spirit best friend. Caroline and her friend Sophie have been close friends since the 3rd grade, and I just had to share Sophie's birthday note she posted on Caroline's facebook page . . . it pretty much sums up my daughter right now:
