life in little squares

"Taking pictures is savoring life intensely,
every hundredth of a second."
Marc Ribaud

Meet my new favorite:  INSTAGRAM.

I guess it's not really "new" anymore since I began using the app about a year ago, but after discovering that one can share their entire instagram account online, I thought it's about time to mention my favorite little pastime.

Yes, the blog as suffered as a result of IG, but it's been wonderful to capture and share little moments in time that would otherwise be forgotten or stashed on my phone or camera forever.  Sometimes it's an event that needs to be recorded, such as a school or piano performance, family gatherings, vacations, birthdays, etc.  But more often than not, it's those seemingly insignificant moments that beckon to be captured:  time spent reading aloud with my daughter, the split second when I'm captivated by a sunset, mountain peak or a field of flowers; the impromptu pictures taken on a morning hike, my children's artwork, or anything in general that makes me smile.

All in all, it's added up to about a picture a day, so yes, it's our past year in little squares.  Oh, and the filters are just oh, so fun!

Now that my IG photos are online, the past year of daily pics are HERE.

Phew, almost feels like the blog is caught up now ;).

simple rules to live by . . .

1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less.

No one can go back and make a brand new start. Anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.

When something happens to you, good or bad, consider what it means. There's a purpose to life's events, to teach you something you need to learn.

You can't make someone love you. All you can do is to be someone who can be loved.

It's better to lose your pride to the one you love, than to lose the one you love because of pride.

We spend too much time looking for the right person to love or finding fault with those we already love, when instead we should be perfecting the love we give.

Never abandon an old friend. You will never find one who can take his or her place. Friendship is like wine; it gets better as it grows older.

Many thanks to my friend Lyn for letting me swipe this awesome post from her blog!

happy fall

Finding the perfect pumpkins with my girls

What a beautiful, crisp, autumn morning it is today - we couldn't ask for a more perfect Halloween - even I get a little giddy on this most wonderful holiday :-).   I absolutely adore everything about this time of year:  the bright blue skies, cooler days and evenings, sweaters and jackets, leaves changing and dropping, the World Series, pumpkin patches, school Halloween parades and parties, roasted pumpkin seeds, neighborhood gatherings . . . even the last minute scurry to put costumes together!

One of our favorite traditions is listening to Jerry Seinfeld's "Halloween."  It's hilarious and the kids never tire of hearing this classic stand-up routine.  We keep the cd in the car during the season and listen during long drives, plus the illustrations in the book are fantastic.  CLICK HERE to listen.

This tradition is one for the ages . . . I'm sure my grandkids will be listening and laughing along with their parents in the years to come.

Perfect 24

Most of us have good days, some great days, a few "just alright" days, and hopefully not too many lousy days.  But rare is the day that scores a perfect 10and since they don't come along that often, I feel compelled to record my perfect 24 hours, beginning at 8pm last night . . .
  • First gathering of my newly formed book group - a most amazing collection of friends whom I absolutely adore.  It was an insightful discussion about this beautifully written memoir, and I think we all enjoyed each other's company immensely.  Thanks friends for a delightful evening!
  • Peaceful, restful, invigorating night's sleep (rare for me - especially when Chris is away).  I attribute my great night's rest to the new exercise regime I am crazy enough to do with some other friends - we'll see if I can make it the entire 60 days . . . I'll be a believer if I actually do get "ripped abs" ;-).
  • Waking up to the SUN and bright blue skies early this morning (which are highly appreciated after gloomy, dreary, gray days).  Time to read scriptures, get the kids off to school, straighten the kitchen, and then off for snowshoe adventure with Lucy up Millcreek Canyon.  Even though I did find it ironic I was snowshoeing in a foot of fresh powder at the end of April, I couldn't imagine a more perfect way to begin my day.
  • The PIANO TUNER guy came!  OK, this might sound a little strange, but it really is one of those days that brings a smile to my face - every 6 months we get the piano tuned, and it's like playing tennis with new strings - nothing better.  I LOVE playing on a freshly tuned piano . . . . ahhhh, one of life's little pleasures.  After he left, I sat and played piano for almost an hour - heavenly.
  • I found a Thule cargo box on KSL for a GREAT price . . . deals make me happy, especially when I was the first caller and 3 people called while I was talking to the guy :-).  Now our family can travel in a little more comfort this summer without taking out seats to fit sleeping bags!
  • Productivity.  I organized the girls' drawers, cleaned their room, changed sheets, then organized and cleaned the kids' bathroom and my room . . . all while listening to NPR for company.  This was the most thought provoking story I heard today - I was deeply moved and profoundly grateful for my own blessed life, and the lives of opportunity and safety my daughters enjoy.
  • P90X.  Enough said.
  • A sweet hour spent visiting teaching one of my favorite people in the world - time to reflect on the gospel, share insights, and gain wisdom from one another.  Perfect.
  • Heading out the door to meet some girlfriends for dinner and knowing Ryan is out on the patio grill cooking dinner for the girls - what a guy.
  • Spending time with dear friends, catching up with one another, comparing wrinkles (or botox injections depending who you are), and laughing so hard I think we really were a menace in the restaurant . . . I LOVE my friends!
  • As I pulled into the garage this evening, I was met by Ryan holding the phone out to me . . . it was Chris, calling from China.  My day ended with a conversation with my sweetheart whose morning is just beginning on the other side of the world.
Yes, a most perfect day indeed.

Welcome, welcome

January 1.  January 2.  2011.

Perfect Days, beautiful introduction to the new year and hopefully an omen of goodwill that will continue throughout the rest of the year . . .

  • Spending the morning with Caroline working on her science fair project (topic: How do certain variables in physics contribute to increasing speed in a topspin serve?).  We had a great time at the club timing her serves, however after approximately 150, her arm is more than sore today, ouch.  Top Speed for Miss Caroline = 87 mph.
  • Taking the little girls and the dog sledding.  Watching Lucy hone in on her herding instincts as she followed the kids up the hill, chased them down, and then rounded them up and chased them back up the hill.  Gorgeous day on the neighborhood sledding hill.
  • Catching up with Ryan and watching a little football together after he returned home from yet another fun day spent on the slopes.
  • FRIENDS.  Enjoying a quick New Year's day visit with dear friends, then receiving another friend's e-mail which included her flight plans from NY for her weekend visit at the end of the month, and then realizing that in two days another close friend will be flying in from Texas and we have an afternoon planned together.  My life wouldn't be complete without my friends!
  • DATE NIGHT with Chris.  Ahhh, fabulous dinner here at a cozy table by the window, then next door to see what we both agreed to be the best movie of the year, The King's Speech . . . intelligently written, brilliantly acted, and just plain inspiring.  I would love to see Colin Firth receive an Academy Award for his incredible performance.  We talked about this film the entire ride home and realized how it is movies like this that truly elevate and uplift us, how we leave the theater feeling edified and more enlightened than when we entered.  We arrived home that evening to happy children, happy dog, and a messy house . . . but oh, how wonderful it is to spend time together alone, reconnecting after a busy holiday season :-).
  • Sunday began with a change in church schedule which means we get to sleep in . . . hallelujah!  I also received some welcome news that a change was coming my way.  Today I was released from my callings as Primary pianist and Activity Day leader and called to teach Relief Society as well as the YW sport's director.  OK, as much as I loved primary and working with the children in the ward (5 years), it was definitely time for a change.  Today I could attend Chris' insightful gospel doctrine lesson and then Relief Society in its entirety . . . something I've only been able to do a handful of times since we moved in the ward.  I am really looking forward to these new callings!
  • TESTIMONY meeting.  No travelogs, no never ending stories without a point, no ramblings about family history . . . just beautiful, inspiring, simple testimonies born one after another.  It was truly one of the most spiritual meetings I've ever attended.  I am so grateful for the faith, love, and strength of my fellow ward members and their examples.  I left sacrament meeting today with my own testimony strengthened and a resolve for this new year to continue to increase my personal faith and knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Indeed, the perfect way to begin 2011.

Thank you God for the beauty of last week.

In my element.  Really, what more can a girl ask for than a pair of hiking shoes, a camelback, and a some time for meditation, exercise, and bonding with friends while wandering through our majestic mountains in their full autumnal splendor??

Not much.

Life is Wonderful

I really should be packing and cleaning and doing the 100 things that need to be done before we leave this afternoon, but I had to share my new favorite song because it relates a beautiful truth that's been on my mind as of late.  Plus, it just makes me smile :-) . . .

"For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things.  If not so, righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad.  Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one . . .  And if ye shall say there is no law, ye shall also say there is no sin.  If ye shall say there is no sin, ye shall also say there is no righteousness.  And if there be no righteousness there be no happiness.  And if there be no righteousness nor happiness there be no punishment nor misery.  And if these things are not, there is no God.  And if there is no God we are not, neither the earth; for there could have been no creation of things, neither to act nor to be acted upon . . .

And now, I speak unto you these things for your profit and learning; for there is a God, and he hath created all things, both the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are, both things to act and things to be acted upon  . . .

And now, behold, if Adam had not transgressed he would not have fallen, but he would have remained in the garden of Eden.  And all things which were created must have remained in the same state in which they were after they were created; and they must have remained forever, and had no end . . . wherefore they would have remained in a state of innocence, having no joy, for they knew no misery; doing no good, for they knew no sin.  But behold, all things have been done in the wisdom of him who knoweth all things . . .

Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy."

M A R C H

Ah, it's March and even though it's hard to let winter go, I'm ready for spring and some green!  We have some more skiing to fit in this month which will be nice - I took Liza up to Alta yesterday for an afternoon lesson and just sat out on the deck overlooking the resort, soaked in the rays, and read my book while taking in the breathtaking views of the canyon on a beautiful day (wish I had remembered my camera).

So, even if I'm ready for blossoms, green grass, and warmer temperatures, I'm sure going to miss amazing days like yesterday when the bright blue sky is the perfect canvas for the towering snow covered granite walls of Little Cottonwood!

How blessed we are to live in one of the few spots on earth where we enjoy all four seasons - I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything.  Life is good . . . everyday, everywhere we can tap into the amazing blessings offered if we just open our eyes a little wider, take a little deeper breath, and realize the potential this incredible life experience brings to each individual.

A favorite quote in anticipation of the new season . . .

Cultivate an attitude of happiness.
Cultivate a spirit of optimism.
Walk with faith, rejoicing in the beauties of nature,
in the goodness of those you love,
in the testimony which you carry in your heart
concerning things divine.

Peace and Joy in the Journey

The other day while straightening Caroline's bedroom, I ran across a handout she recieved Sunday from her lesson in YW.  It included this excerpt from a talk given by Joseph B. Wirthlin and I was touched as I read it - such a beautiful reminder for me and my daughter of finding joy in every moment . . .

"The people of God are a joyful people.  We understand there are times for sobriety, reverence, and devotion; we also understand that we possess the joyful priciples of eternal life.  So many of us are always waiting to be happy.  For too many, happiness is just over the horizon, never reachable.  Every time we climb one hill, happiness beckons just beyond the next.

Make up your mind to be happy - even when you don't have money, even when you don't have a clear complexion, even when you don't have the Nobel Prize.  Some of the happiest people I know have none of the things the world insists are necessary for satisfaction and joy.  Why are they  happy?  I suppose it is because they didn't listen very well.  Or they listen too well - to the things their hearts tell them.  They glory in the beauty of the earth.  They glory in honest labor.  They glory in the scriptures.  They glory in the presence of the Holy Ghost.  Do not procrastinate a minute longer.  Every moment is precious.  Determine now that you will make of your lives something remarkable!

As I look back on it now, I wonder if those times of trial and loneliness weren't instrumental in strengthening my character and heightening my desire to succeed.  Those times of seeming failure may have been some of the most instrumental of my life, because they prepared me for greater things to come.

Create of your lives something worthy of your divine heritage.  As you pursue righteous desires, the Lord will be with you and will direct your paths.  He wants you to be happy and successful.  He wants you to come unto Him.  May you find peace and joy in your journey throughout life."

~ Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin (1917-2008) ~

It's been awhile!

My mind has finally decided it can't function any longer until it's relieved of the many thoughts, impressions, and ideas floating around inside. I've needed to "catch up" and whenever the thought entered my mind, I decided just to ignore it . . . sort of like the idea of "maybe you should organize that drawer, or closet, or laundry room, or basement" . . . if I just put it out of my mind, it actually doesn't need to happen, right? Wrong!

Besides my impressions of India, there have been so many other little moments during the past few months that I have wanted to capture, so right now I just want to write about those small, but meaningful times that have meant so much and made me so happy:

1. Making homemade apple pie this afternoon with Sophie and Caroline using the apples from our backyard apple trees.

2. UEA weekend - 5 days of complete bliss! We didn't go anywhere, no packing, no long car rides, just the kids and I spending our days sleeping in, spending time together, and enjoying the crisp fall weather. Memory to capture: walking through the zoo, holding hands with a little girl on each side, feeling the warmth of an autumn evening, and suddenly stopping, crouching down and smothering these two sweethearts and whispering in their ears how HAPPY I was at that moment and how I couldn't imagine being anywhere else in the world but with them!

3. Conference weekend - inspiring, enlightening, touching, life altering. One of those conferences that truly spoke to me. Some of the talks that stood out in my mind were given by Elder Uchtdorf, Boyd K. Packer, Henry B. Eyring, Jeffry R. Holland, and Elder Christofferson. What beautiful messages!

4. Listening to Chris play the piano in the evening, as he's doing this moment - always such a calming influence at the end of the day. Also, the other night after coming back from a wedding reception with Sophie and Caroline while Liza and Ryan were off at friends - it was the four of us laughing, dancing, being silly in the living room while Chris played and sang for us. Peaceful evening.

5. Bear Lake this summer . . . making dinner EARLY one late afternoon so we could enjoy the evening down on the beach as the sun was setting. I was stretched out on my stomach reading a book, watching the glow of the sun illuminate the water and hills as the kids played in the reeds near the shore while catching frogs . . . ahhhh. Splendid indeed.

6. Chris planning and following through on a trip for he and Ryan. Watching the excitement build each day as Chris would plan another leg of their "guys trip" was so sweet, it almost brought me to tears a few times. He waited until everything was all set - plane tickets, hotel rooms, rental car, and each day's activities planned, before he surprised Ryan a few weeks before they were to leave on an unforgettable week together in Michigan, Toronto, and upstate New York.

7. Watching the growth and maturity in both Ryan and Caroline. This summer both kids were involved in so many programs and camps it about made my head spin, but they couldn't have been happier and we felt so blessed that they had these amazing opportunities to grow spiritually, socially, and develop their talents. They both participated in our ward youth conference - river rafting down the Colorado river and hiking in Moab - it was a beautiful testimony growing experience and Ryan spoke in sacrament meeting the following Sunday about what he felt and learned. Caroline went to girls' camp for the first time and thought it was just about the greatest week of her life, and she kept busy with tennis camps and a theater camp at Hale Center Theater where she met so many new friends and loved every minute. Ryan attended EFY down in Provo this summer and came back with a stronger testimony, greater faith, and so many fun stories about his time spent with other youth and fabulous counselors. He also went to Lake Powell with the Young Men in our ward and participated in a couple lacrosse camps.

I couldn't be more thrilled with the direction these two children's lives are taking. They bring so much joy and happiness into our family and both Chris and I are so grateful for the example they are to their younger sisters.

8. Sitting next to my dear friend Jodelle with Caroline on the other side at her daughter Hannah's (one of Caroline's best friends) dance performance. There we were, on the 2nd row, smiling SO big and making funny faces while Hannah was trying to perform her "flying monkey" dance in this ridiculous unitard that Jodelle thought was hideous, that we made her laugh and mess up. It was just one of those "had to be there" moments, but just the fact that our daughters are such good friends and we all get one another's humor, care so much for each other, and have so much fun, I don't know - it was one of those evenings I'll never forget. Caroline and I laughed all the way home!

9. Taking Ryan down to Utah Lake for his personal watercraft license. I had to drive Ryan down to take his test and back home one summer evening, and before I knew it, it turned out to be one of those rare moments when we just talked, and talked, and talked. For some reason, returning to Provo always opens the doors to so many memories that I just began sharing some dating stories and other stories of college life, and before I knew it Ryan was full of questions and we were laughing so hard at some of the silly things I did my freshman year, my lame dates, and other fun BYU tidbits . . . it's a wonderful thing when your kids are old enough to understand your past and laugh with you at some of your mistakes - great bonding moment.

10. Sophie's baptism. I'll never forget how sweet and pure and innocent my Sophie was on that day. Truly one of our Heavenly Father's choicest spirits. So much love during her baptism that Chris could barely say the words, and then Sophie stepping into the dressing room in tears - overwhelmed and so touched by her own feelings that all she could do was cry, so we just sat together and talked . . . a moment I'll never forget.

11. Being constantly entertained and feeling the pure joy and love that makes our Elizabeth. Everything that comes out of that child's mouth makes me smile - everyday. Her constant hugs and kisses are just so sweet, I don't want to think about the day she'll stop coming over for a hug every 5 minutes. I've been such a homebody lately and it's because I want to spend my days with my youngest child - reading stories in her favorite chair, going on walks, going to the park, and just letting her play in the playroom she created in the dining room - letting her be in her own little world. She is truly one of the greatest blessings in our family. None of us could imagine our home without our Liza.

12. Making time with Caroline to go to the "Art Market" yesterday and let her pick out some jewelry with some money she's earned from babysitting jobs, then playing tennis together. I'm not sure how much longer "hanging out with Mom on a Saturday afternoon" will appeal to her, but for now she enjoys it and really had a great time, and it sure made me happy just spending time with my beautiful daughter.

I'll wrap it up there. It feels good to write again, to express myself and catch up on those little moments and feelings that would soon be forgotten if I didn't take the time to write them down.

So simple . . .

Yesterday. Perfect. Sun. Blue sky. Slight breeze. Time with my little girls. Time reading together on the back patio. Time for a walk, scooter, swings, basketball. Time to listen and laugh. Resting together. Swimming with Dad. Late night movie with friends . . . snuggling on the couch with my sweethearts. Yes, it is the simple things. Happy, happy summer's day!

My 12-year old

It was Caroline's 12th birthday on May 25th and I'm just now getting around to blogging about what a special, sweet, polite, kind, sincere . . . I could go on forever describing this girl! We are truly blessed to have Caroline in our life and I am so pleased with her optimism, helpfulness, and especially her sensitivity. She is a genuine friend to all who know her, and a very patient older sister to Sophie and Liza. In the 6th graduation poll, she was voted "happiest" out of all the 6th graders and I couldn't agree more. Caroline brightens the room with her smile and keeps us smiling ourselves with her witty remarks and laughter.

To celebrate of our very own "Sweet Caroline," here is a short video of our girl (unfortunately, I don't have any pics of her when she was tiny scanned, so I just used some from the past four years) . . .

The Little Things

I found this tea towel at one of my favorite boutiques the other day and just had to get it for my oven door, and since I do have days that are less than favorable, I wanted this little reminder that it is those little things that make me the happiest and bring the most joy into my daily life.

In eastern philosophy, the more one dwells on the negative, the more that negativity becomes part of his/her soul, until it eventually takes over. It can be hard to stop that cycle of thinking and there are certainly days when I begin to dwell on the negative, but when my mind turns to those little things that bring joy into my every day, the cycle stops and is replaced with optimism and peace.

Here are just a few of the small, seemingly insignificant things that make me smile and remind me that life IS good:

the sunrise through the kitchen windows
the sweet touch from Chris as he wakes me up every morning and sits on the edge of the bed to talk before he leaves for the day
the eager hugs and kisses from warm little bodies each morning
the mountains surrounding our home, and how they never fail to impress each time I walk back home from the mailbox
good friends, uplifting discussions, spontaneous conversations with neighbors outside while the kids play
laughter, giggles, squeals of delight
the excitement and nonstop chatter surrounding the kids when they arrive home from school each day
the peace inside the house when I have it to myself
the unexpected, touching conversation with a child while we're fixing dinner together
listening to a little one read out loud
taking the time to savor a book, listen to music, or play piano
freshly changed sheets on the bed, soft pillows, and the stars - always there, out the window for me to enjoy as I fall asleep

Spring and FLOWERS

After being teased incessantly by mother nature the past few weeks, spring is here to stay . . . I'm sure by just saying that I've now cursed the weather and we'll see snow again before June - never fails. But for the moment and in celebration of the bright blue skies, warmer temperatures, blossoms, and green appearing everywhere, Liza and I packed up lunch, grabbed some friends, and headed to the Tulip Festival at Thanksgiving Point yesterday. Truly a perfect afternoon and celebration of the season. If you've never been to the gardens down there, make it happen - you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Here are some more cute photos from our afternoon. Michelle has a really great, awesome, amazing, make me drool camera, so her pictures look better than mine every would - check them out!

Happy, happy, happy day :-).

Ahhhh . . . heavenly

Yesterday a crew of 4 lovely ladies came to my home to CLEAN . . . yes clean, not just any clean, but that "really, truly MOVE things so you can dust under them" clean. Can I tell you how thrilling that was . . . so thrilling in fact that I was speechless - literally speechless watching them scrubbing the floorboards, blinds, and toilet bowls (by HAND mind you). OK, for those of you that get your house cleaned by other people on a regular basis the "I'm so happy right now I could cry" aspect of having someone do your dirty work for you may have worn off by now. OK, so I'm not kidding here, I actually called Chris to tell him "thanks SO much, this is the best day of my life" and left an emotional voice mail. When he called back I could just see him rolling his eyes while he asked, "ok, were you really crying when you left that message?"

I stayed for a few minutes after they got to work to gather my things and Elizabeth as I watched in amazement. It was wonderful - i took off for a walk through the neighborhood and then to a friend's for a visiting teaching appointment. OK - so, here's the best part - when I came home the first thing I saw was our piano with the cabinet wide open and just gleaming (wow - no dust), it was so inviting that I couldn't resist and since the entire house was sparkling clean I had all the time in the world to do something just for me. So, I got Liza settled with her crayons - one of her favorite activities is drawing while i play, she tells me: "you go play piano and i'll sit and color" - and I sat down and played and played - for 90 minutes in fact. It was nirvana. Mom, if only I could have enjoyed those long practice sessions when I was fifteen, right? I clearly remember the pains of practicing in my youth and how the thought of sitting at the piano for an hour or more was really quite dreadful, however, now with no one making sure my scales and finger exercises were accurate and my recital piece was polished, playing the piano has taken on a whole new meaning. Oh, and mom, I'm loving the music you gave me for my birthday - when I play out of that book Chris says he feels like he's wallking through the English countryside, which is just what it sounds like.
Hey, I took pictures - here's Liza in our "dining room," well, that's what it's supposed to be, but for now it's the arts & crafts room and yes, that's our guinea pig Daisie over against the window. It's a great room for the kids and keeps them close when I play . . . oooohh, and do you see how awesome the floor looks!
FYI - here's my recommendation for the most excellent cleaning company, oh and guys pay attention, it's also the perfect Mother's Day gift: "Super Ant professional house cleaning services" - #265-0082
